Sonny is a retired horse from an out of state police department.  Sonny has a special need because he is allergic to hay.  This is commonly known as heaves or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In this disease, breathing out can be so difficult that the horse grunts with the effort of expelling the last bit of air.

The allergic reaction creates excess mucus in the lungs making very little air space.  At some time prior to coming to the Sanctuary, he got into some molded hay which caused a severe allergic reaction and resulted in this disease (COPD).

This makes him extra expensive to feed during the winter months when there is no green pasture to graze.  The horse sanctuary needs your contributions to provide Sonny with one of the following special treatments to deal with his allergies:
bullet

Ventipulmon - This medication alleviates his allergic reaction, allowing him to stay with the herd and eat hay.  It costs $180 a bottle which lasts 5 weeks and is necessary for about 5 months out of the year.  Normal feed and maintenance cost an additional $37 per month.
